How to Build Your Cigna International Plan
Creating a comprehensive, tailored plan with Cigna Global is simple.
- First, applicants choose from the Silver, Gold or Platinum plan level. The Cigna Silver plan has a benefit limit of $1,000,000, Gold has a $2,000,000 limit, and Platinum's benefit limit is unlimited.
- Then they select their coverage location, either worldwide coverage including the U.S. or excluding the U.S. Members who exclude the U.S. can still receive limited emergency hospitalization benefits if they have a mishap while on a brief visit to that country.
- Next, they select any optional additional modules they would like to add to their plan, such as international outpatient, health and wellbeing and vision and dental. Each module has deductible options and a benefit maximum.
- Applicants can adjust their premiums with a wide range of deductibles and co-insurance options to suit their budgets. Choosing a higher deductible and co-insurance option will lower the premium amount, but out-of-pocket costs are higher until the deductible and/or co-insurance is reached.
- Finally, applicants choose whether they would like to pay their premium monthly, quarterly or annually. Cigna accepts payments through credit and debit cards or by bank wire transfer if paid annually. Customers who pay quarterly or annually have lower premiums than customers that pay monthly.

Cigna Global FAQs
A Cigna Global health insurance plan costs as little as $150 per month for basic coverage in 2025. For most clients, the average price of a plan is $460 per month or $5,520 per year. The cost will vary greatly depending on your age, your citizenship, and where you will be living.
One great feature of the Cigna Global plan is that you can adjust the policy structure to keep its cost low. You can freely add or remove features and coverage modules in exchange for a different premium.
To determine the cost of a plan for you and your family, click here to request a free Cigna Global quote.
How To Manage Your Plan Costs and Adjust Premiums
Cigna Global determines its premium rates based on several factors, including your choice of plan tier. Cigna offers three main plan tiers called Silver, Gold, and Platinum, each with increasing cost and coverage. Aside from tier choice, the plan's cost also depends on the area of coverage you choose and your age.
You can manage the premium rate by selecting a deductible or a cost-share option, which will lower your monthly or annual costs. Deductibles and cost-share options are recommended for individuals and families who want to save more money every month. However, take note that though your premium will be lower, your out-of-pocket payments will increase.
Lastly, suppose you choose to add outpatient care and other optional modules to make your Cigna International Health Plan more comprehensive. In that case, this will increase the cost of your plan while providing additional benefits.
Pro Tip: After requesting a quote, ask your broker to provide at least two additional quotes, one with additional coverage and benefits and one less expensive option.
You may apply for Cigna Global insurance as early as 45 days before the start date you requested. Applying earlier than the said period date, or having your start date delayed, might result in you being required to provide updated medical information from your healthcare provider. You may also need to provide a statement of health indicating that there have been no new medical conditions since the time of your initial application.
Start now by requesting a quote for the Cigna Global plan.
The coverage Cigna expatriate health insurance provides is very flexible. Starting with the core policy, you can get cover for essential treatment and hospital stays. Fees for consultation, wellness care, accommodation, and inpatient and outpatient treatments are also covered by the policy. The Gold and Platinum policies provide higher levels of cover, including routine maternity checkups.
You can tailor your Cigna Expatriate Health Insurance to provide more extensive outpatient benefits, including doctor visits and prescriptions. You can even add medical evacuation and vision and dental benefits to your plan.
Does Cigna Global cover inpatient treatment?
Yes, inpatient treatment is covered by Cigna Global health insurance plans. It is included as a standard within the core Cigna Global medical health insurance policy. It covers inpatient treatment that requires an overnight stay in a hospital. It also covers treatment at the hospital as a day patient.
Does Cigna International cover outpatient treatment?
Cigna Global can cover expenses on selected outpatient costs such as treatment room fees, surgeon and anesthetic costs, advanced imaging, cancer, and psychiatric care. If you want more comprehensive outpatient cover, add the International Outpatient option to your Cigna plan at the time of your application.
Does Cigna cover vision care or dental treatment?
Cigna Global insurance provides core benefits coverage in the event of an accident, such as emergency dental cover which requires you to be treated in a hospital. If you want more comprehensive coverage, choose the International Vision and Dental option to enjoy access to a wide variety of preventative, routine, major, and orthodontic treatments.
Does Cigna International cover birth control?
No, birth control is not a covered benefit. However, if your doctor prescribes a form of birth control for medical reasons after you have applied for a Cigna International Health plan, a valid exception can be made.
If you have purchased a Cigna international health plan, you can be covered for medical expenses and health services anywhere in the world. You have the option of purchasing worldwide coverage including or excluding coverage in the USA. If you choose to exclude coverage in the USA, your plan will provide benefits throughout the world but not in the USA. This option is more cost-effective but will limit your area of coverage.
The Cigna International Customer Care Team will assist in arranging your treatment plan to avoid delays and confusion and point you in the right direction. This will save you the time and hassle of looking for a hospital, clinic, or medical practitioner in a foreign land.
The Cigna Team knows that there will be times when it will not be practical or possible for a beneficiary to contact them for prior approval. This usually happens in emergencies where the hospital cannot contact the insurer before proceeding with the urgent operation. In circumstances like this, the Cigna Team will ask that you or the affected beneficiary get in touch with them 48 hours after the treatment has been sought so that they can confirm whether the procedure is covered by the policy.
No, it does not. The purpose of your membership card is to identify you as a member; it does not guarantee all payment capabilities. Be assured that you are covered under the terms of your insurance contract based on the coverage and benefits selected. We always recommend that you contact the customer service team who will be able to assist you in finding a doctor and, if appropriate, will provide a guarantee of coverage for specific treatments if approved.
When you need treatment, call the Cigna Treatment Approval Team at +44 (0) 1475 788182 or through their U.S. toll-free number at 1 800 835 7677. If you have a Cigna UK plan, you can log your inquiries through the member portal.
They will arrange to pay for your hospital, clinic, or doctor directly wherever possible and as long as it is a covered benefit as part of the plan you chose at the time of the application.
Once you have purchased your plan, you will be able to visit the Cigna Global website and log in to the online Customer Area. From there, you can search their directory of hospitals, clinics, and doctors partnered with Cigna. Just type in your postcode or zip code, specify the distance you are willing to travel, and the page will list the medical experts within your area.
Alternatively, you can call the Cigna Customer Care Team. Always remember to take your Cigna ID card with you when you go for treatment. Ask your hospital, medical practitioner, or clinic about direct billing in case this has not yet been confirmed. If approved, Cigna International will arrange to pay the hospital, clinic, or doctor you wish to see directly.

Yes, Cigna Global has an extensive international doctor and hospital network where direct billing is included. Where possible, Cigna international healthcare services will arrange to pay for your hospital, clinic, or doctor directly. However, if you have chosen a deductible, you must pay this amount yourself.
It is always recommended that you contact Cigna Global Customer Care prior to receiving treatment and to arrange for direct billing.
In case direct billing is not covered automatically, contacting Cigna prior to treatment will make future payments and claims reimbursement easier to manage.
You must call Cigna Global before getting treatment. They can assist you in finding the best clinic, doctor, or hospital near you and arrange to pay them directly. This will save you the cost and hassle of paying for it yourself and then later requesting reimbursement from Cigna. Cigna Global will cover the cost of your initial specialist consultation, along with any prescribed medication, even without having prior approval, provided that the treatment is covered by your plan.
In most cases, the clinic, doctor, or hospital will send the invoice to Cigna directly. However, there may be times when they will instead give you the invoice after treatment. Should this happen, send the invoice along with the claim form to Cigna, and they will handle the payment for you. If you have chosen to apply any deductibles to your plan, you will need to pay this amount to your hospital, clinic, or doctor first.
Calling Cigna Global before getting treatment, especially during an emergency, may not always be possible. You will need to pay for your treatment yourself in this case, then send the invoice and claim form to Cigna after. You will be reimbursed, less any deductibles, within five days of receipt.
If you have paid for your treatment yourself, you will need to claim back your covered costs, less any deductibles and/or cost shares you are responsible for. You will find full details on how to get treatment and make a claim, along with copies of claims forms in your welcome pack. You can also download additional claims forms here:
You can send your invoice and claim form to Cigna International by any of the following means:
- Submit them directly via your secure online Customer Area.
- Email them to: cghoclaims@cigna.com
- Fax them to: +44 (0) 1475 492113

How will Cigna reimburse me for my claim?
If you have already paid for the treatment with your own money, simply complete the claim form and mail, email, or fax it to Cigna Global along with your invoice. Make sure you keep the original form with you in case the insurer requires it later.
Cigna Global can reimburse you within five working days after receiving the fully completed paperwork. You decide what currency you want the money to be in when you receive it in your account. Because Cigna has a wide network across the world, you can choose to be reimbursed in more than 135 currencies.
When you create your tailored plan, you have the option of adding deductibles. If, for example, you choose a deductible of $250, you will need to pay the first $250 of a covered claim or covered claims in any period of coverage directly to your hospital, clinic, or doctor at the time of treatment.
So if your treatment costs are $500, you will need to pay $250, and Cigna Global pay the remaining $250 of covered costs. If a deductible is chosen, you would only have to pay this once during any cover period regardless of the number of claims.
Cost-share is the percentage of every claim you will pay. The Out of Pocket Maximum is the maximum amount you would have to pay in cost-share per policy year.
Here is an example of the computation:
- You have a claim value of $20,000
- You have a $500 deductible on your policy.
- You have a 20% cost share with a $2,000 out of pocket maximum.
- You would pay $2,500. Cigna Global would pay $17,500
After you paid your deductible of $500, your cost share is 20% of $19,500 ($3,900). This is more than your out-of-pocket maximum of $2,000, so you would only pay $2,000 which is the out-of-pocket maximum. In total, you will be paying $2,500, which is the sum of the cost-share and the $500 deductible you paid at the outset. Cigna will cover the remaining $17,500 of the claim value.

Yes - pending a review of your medical history Cigna Global will cover any pre-existing medical conditions that are not specifically excluded at the time of your application. If you have sought advice or experienced symptoms before your plan start date, regardless of whether you have been diagnosed or not, Cigna may decide to add special exclusions to your plan. So you must complete the medical questionnaire as accurately as possible when applying.
If you have pre-existing conditions, Cigna Global will typically handle them in one of four ways.
- The pre-existing condition will be covered as any other illness. This is usually the case with a minor pre-existing condition such as allergies.
- The pre-existing condition will be excluded.
- The policy will cover the condition but you may be charged a "rate up" to cover the additional costs associated with that condition or specific limits will be placed on any costs associated with that condition.
- Your application will be denied.
