Need medical care in Germany? Explore our list of international hospitals in Germany for visitors, including those in Berlin.
The number of hospitals in Germany exceeds 2,000. Approximately 50% of the hospitals in Germany are public, and among these, 30% are university hospitals. The other half of hospitals in Germany are private, with 30% being not-for-profit and the remainder for-profit. Many hospitals in Germany have services for international citizens.
Like everything else in Germany, German hospitals are modern and hold themselves to high-quality standards, particularly those offering private health services. Physicians and staff are well-trained, and a German hospital will give you an excellent variety of specialized treatments. You may also find many specialists (e.g., internists or radiologists) outside hospitals in Germany, meaning you do not even have to go to a hospital unless in emergencies.
Be forewarned that the smaller private hospitals in Germany may not offer emergency services. You’ll typically get treatment even if you can’t provide proof of health insurance when you arrive in an emergency room. Should you have no insurance, treatment and admittance will be costly. You’ll want to check with your global health insurance provider before traveling to Germany and see if they’re going to reimburse you for medical treatment in the event you require seeing a doctor while abroad.
