The Best International Hospitals in Malaysia for Visitors and Expatriates

Malaysia is renowned worldwide for the quality of its medical facilities, its internationally trained and highly skilled healthcare professionals, and its relatively low cost of medical procedures.

Indeed, Malaysia’s healthcare reputation in general, and its hospitals in particular, has led to the growth of a robust medical tourism industry within the country.

Whether seeking emergency treatment or an elective procedure, visitors and expatriates alike can expect to enjoy high-quality and affordable healthcare in Malaysia’s hospitals.

As in many Asian countries, the availability of both emergency and elective hospital care is much higher in Malaysia’s major cities than in the rural countryside.

The majority of healthcare professionals working in major Malaysian hospitals speak English well, reducing a significant barrier to treatment that visitors and expatriates typically face.

Keep in mind, however, that while staff may speak English fluently, the medical forms necessary for treatment almost always must be completed in the local Bahasa Malaysia language.

Public vs Private Hospitals in Malaysia

Across the country, public and private hospitals are available; Malaysian visitors and expatriates living in the country should be aware of the pros and cons of each. Emergency hospitals located in Malaysia’s major cities are primarily publicly-funded.

If you face a medical emergency within the country, you’ll likely be taken to one of these hospitals for treatment.

Visitors are required to pay for the treating doctor’s time before discharge, as well as any fees associated with a private clinic follow-up. Expatriates may be eligible for public healthcare privileges, provided they (or their employer) pay the additional required fees.

In either case, emergency room and hospitalization costs are typically multiples lower than in many Western countries.

The biggest downside to treatment in Malaysia’s public hospitals is the average wait time. Particularly in the country’s larger cities, the wait times at public healthcare facilities can be significant. Private hospitals offer an alternative to government-supported public healthcare facilities, albeit for a price.

Still, many expats find it worthwhile to pay for private health insurance that provides them with access to private hospitals, and short-term visitors often find the reduced wait times at private Malaysian hospitals worth the added cost.

Visitors and expatriates alike should be aware of the limitations of Malaysia’s ambulance service in the event of an emergency.

In almost every case, taking a taxi to the nearest hospital (public or private) is quicker than waiting for an ambulance to arrive. However, the ambulance services offered by private hospitals are generally more efficient than those of Malaysia’s public hospitals.

One significant difference between public and private healthcare facilities: most private hospitals in the country will provide ambulance service back to your home or hotel after treatment for a cost.
