Expatriates and foreigners can access both public and private hospitals in Indonesia. However, private hospitals are generally the better option for foreigners because they offer higher-quality care and shorter wait times. Most importantly, private hospitals will usually have doctors and staff who speak English.
Indonesia has a referral system for specialized healthcare; however, it is also possible to make an appointment with a specialist at some hospitals without a referral.
While citizens of Indonesia are provided with medical insurance under the Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional scheme, which the World Bank supports, this coverage is not available to foreigners.
